by Team TNF

Know what the true custodians of the wild food in the Nilgiris have to say about sharing their culinary heritage.

In December 2022, The Nilgiris Foundation hosted the inaugural Nilgiris Wild Food Festival, which united local indigenous communities, farmers, chefs, and food enthusiasts to embrace and explore the diverse culinary traditions of the Nilgiris.

This one-of-a-kind festival highlighted wild food, local produce, and indigenous communities, shining a spotlight on the flavors of the region.

But the festival was more than just food.

It focused on the indigenous communities of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, who have a rich history of using wild and local ingredients in their cooking. The festival provided a platform for these communities to showcase their culinary heritage.

The festival was an opportunity to learn about the culture and traditions of the region and connect with the people who call it home. For instance, festival visitors learned about the agricultural practices of the Irula community.

So, whether you’re a food enthusiast, a chef, a farmer, or simply someone who cares about food diversity, join us for this celebration of wild and indigenous food in 2023.
